You should start the financial aid process as soon as you receive your acceptance to FNU. All required financial aid documents are due one week prior to your Frontier/DNP Bound orientation.
Graduate students are eligible for $20,500 in unsubsidized loans per year unless you have reached the maximum aggregate loan limit of $138,500, are currently in default on a student loan, or do not have a valid U.S. citizenship.
No. Graduate students are not eligible for "need-based" federal financial aid, so your income will have no effect on the $20,500 unsubsidized loan offered each year.
No, the student can accept any amount up to the full $20,500. However, please be aware the amount borrowed must be disbursed in three equal disbursements over the award period.
The next steps are completing the MPN for Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans and Entrance Counseling at studentaid.gov. You will electronically sign both forms using your FSA ID issued from the Department of Education.
During a group session at Frontier/DNP Bound, students will meet with Financial Aid Services and receive a copy of their Award Letter. The Financial Aid staff will review Award Letters and answer any questions. Students will also have the opportunity to request a one-on-one meeting with their Financial Aid Officer to discuss any additional questions or concerns.
Financial Aid Services will request loan funds from the Department of Education during week three of each term for all students meeting SAP and having all required documents on file. Loan funds will be processed and applied to student accounts during week four. Residual funds should not be expected any sooner than week five of each term. Residuals delivered via check can take an additional 10-14 business days.
FNU encourages students to borrowing wisely. In the event a student borrows in excess of direct charges such as tuition and fees, and receives a residual/stipend, the overage may only be used for educational expense such as *room/board, books, educational supplies educational equipment, dependent child care expenses, transportation and rental or purchase of a personal computer.
*Room/board refers to lodging, utilities, and food provided for a fee.
No, Financial Aid Services cannot request loan funds if a student fails to meet SAP for two consecutive terms. The student loses federal financial aid eligibility until they have once again met SAP. Students have the right to appeal this decision. Please access the appeal policy located in the FNU catalog.
Please contact your Financial Aid Officer to let them know you will not be enrolled for the next term. We will then cancel any pending loan disbursements.
Although you are not withdrawing from FNU, you will be withdrawn from the federal student loan program and may enter repayment on any previous federal student loans. When you return from AH, you will be reinstated into the federal student loan program. If considering an AH, please review the catalog for the complete AH policy.

Since an Emergency Academic Hiatus (EAH) involves withdrawing from all courses in the current term, this will negatively affect your cumulative completion rate (completed credits/attempted credits). If this results in your completion rate falling below the minimum requirement of 66.67%, you will be placed on financial aid Warning the term you return from EAH. Please note you are still eligible for financial aid during a Warning term. If at the end of the Warning term it is determined that you have met SAP, you will be removed from Warning. If you do not meet SAP, you will lose federal financial aid eligibility until you once again meet SAP.
Financial Aid Services is required to notify the Department of Education that you are no longer academically engaged and therefore you will be withdrawn from the federal financial aid program. You may enter repayment on any student loan(s) obtained at another college/university prior to FNU. You will enter your six-month grace period on loans borrowed while at FNU. If you enter repayment and are not financially prepared to make payments, your lender/servicer can assist you with forbearance. When you return from the EAH your loans will re-enter the in-school deferment status.
The aggregate limit is $138,500. This includes any subsidized/unsubsidized loans borrowed as an undergraduate and is based on your current principal loan balance. Any payments made reducing your principal loan balance will be taken into consideration regarding the aggregate loan limit.
Your financial aid will be renewed every three terms using the then-current FAFSA. Generally, the FAFSA is the only financial aid document that must be completed on an annual basis. Your Financial Aid Officer will notify you if additional documents are required.
Yes, you will remain eligible for financial aid. However, your eligibility may be less than the standard $20,500 if you take one course for every term of an award period.
You will not receive mailed tuition statements; however, you will be notified when tuition charges have been applied to your account, at which point you can log into self-service and view your statement.

Financial Aid Services will update your enrollment status with NSLDS (National Student Loan Data System) within 30 days of the beginning of the term. This should automatically place you in an in-school deferment status on all federal student loans. However, it is strongly encouraged that you log in to your loan servicer's website every 60 days to verify your status and ensure you remain in good standing. If you have been contacted by your lender to begin repayment while you are still enrolled at FNU, please request an in-school deferment form from them and send it to the Registrar (Registrar@frontier.edu; fax 859-251-4583) after you have completed your section of the form.
