External Scholarships
Frontier Nursing University students are eligible to apply for the Geraldine "Polly" Bednash Scholarship offered by AACN and CastleBranch. Two $5,000 scholarships are awarded four times per year. Employer Benefits
Students should investigate obtaining a stipend or a loan from their present or future employer. Hospitals, birth centers, private physicians, and practice groups have all contributed to nurse-midwifery and nurse practitioner education in this manner.
Indian Health Service Loan Repayment Program
Applicants sign contractual agreements with the Secretary for 2 years and fulfill their agreements through full-time clinical practice at an IHS facility or approved Indian health program. In return, the LRP will repay all or a portion of the applicant's eligible health professionals educational loans (undergraduate and graduate) for tuition expenses.
National Health Service Corps Scholarships
The NHSC offers a competitive scholarship program designed for students committed to providing primary health care in communities of greatest need. Scholarship recipients serve where they are most needed upon completion of their training.
The program offers the following benefits for up to 4 years of education:
- Payment of tuition and fees
- Twelve monthly stipend payments per year of scholarship support
- Payment of other reasonable educational expenses, such as books, supplies, and equipment
National Health Service Corp Loan Repayment Program
Offered to students who will serve two years in a health professional shortage area. Clinicians can get up to $50,000 to repay their health profession student loans.
VA Benefits
Frontier Nursing University Inc. is approved to offer Veterans Benefits for the enrollment of veterans, reservists, servicepersons, and other eligible persons.
The Masters of Science in Nursing degree with three concentrations in nurse-midwifery, family nurse practitioner, and women’s health care nurse practitioner are approved for Frontier Nursing University. The post-graduate certificates in nurse-midwifery, family nurse practitioner, and women’s health care nurse practitioner are not approved for the enrollment of veterans and other eligible persons.

The Veterans United Foundation Scholarship
The Veterans United Foundation Scholarship is awarded through the Veterans United Foundation. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization made up financial contributions from the employees of Veterans United Home Loans. They will be awarding up to 5 one-time scholarships for up to $50,000 each for this upcoming semester to eligible students. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be a surviving spouse or child of a deceased servicemember or Veteran. Full details can be found here.
U.S. Air Force Health Professions Scholarship
Health Professions Scholarship Program offers three- and four-year scholarships for health care professionals. Recipients must serve 45 days of active duty in the Air Force while on scholarship. Upon graduation, must serve one year of active duty for each year of scholarship support received. Contact your local Air Force recruiter for more details.
State Financial Aid
State Health Departments in several states offer support for students who will commit to work in underserved areas. Several states also have loan repayment programs. Many states also have reduced interest loans for students. Contact your local bank, your legislator, your health department, primary care organization, or the loan or scholarship office of your local college for further information. Minority Grants and Scholarships
African American College Grants
Historically, African Americans have been the most disadvantaged race in the United States and while plans that have been put into effect are increasingly changing this situation, many black individuals lack the necessary funds to attend an institution of higher learning. This condition is remedied through grants available specifically to African American individuals in the United States who qualify in one way or another. The United Negro college Fund, or UNCF, is the oldest and largest organization devoted to providing college funding for African Americans. It administers grants, scholarships, and loans to needy students who qualify.
Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium
ANTHC Scholarship Program provides undergraduate and graduate scholarships for Alaska Native/American Indian students pursuing an education in the health care field. Must be a full-time student and a permanent Alaska resident.
Eligibility: children or grandchildren of Montana members of ALA.
American College of Nurse-Midwives
The American College of Nurse-Midwives offers various scholarships for student nurse-midwives who are members of the College.
American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP.org) and the American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP.org) both offer scholarship money to student members. The website for both organizations describes the scholarships and the process of application.
American Assembly for Men in Nursing AAMN Foundation Scholarships
Provides scholarships for male students of all races and ethnicities who are seeking a pre-RN licensure or graduate degree in nursing. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution.
American Association of Critical Care Nurses
Educational Advancement Scholarships available to AACN members who are RNs completing a baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing.
American Holistic Nurses’ Association
Charlotte McGuire Scholarship Program Must be a current member of AHNA enrolled in an undergraduate (ADN, BSN, ADN-to-BSN) or graduate nursing program related to holistic nursing.
Association on American Indian Affairs
For full-time graduate students; must be from a federally recognized tribe. Various other undergraduate and graduate scholarships are also available.

Johnson & Johnson/AACN Nurse Faculty Scholarship
Available to underrepresented minority graduate students who intend to pursue careers as nurse educators. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a doctoral nursing program or a clinically-focused master's degree program. Applicants must also commit to becoming full-time faculty in an accredited registered nursing program after graduation.
Colonial Dames American Indian Nurse Scholarship
Candidate must be 1/4 American Indian and enrolled in a tribe. Average award is $1,500.
ExceptionalNurse.com Scholarship
Offers undergraduate and graduate scholarships for full-time nursing students with a documented disability who have demonstrated a commitment to working with people with disabilities.
In the United States, the number of Hispanic students in college is far lower than that of blacks or other minorities; even through this group is surpassing African American in population. In order to even the odds, several grants are offered to disadvantaged individuals from Spanish speaking countries to help them create a better future by assisting in the funding of a college education.
Hispanic Scholarship Fund Institute
Available to Hispanic students attending an accredited not-for-profit graduate school. Supported annually by the U.S. Department of Energy.
Minority Nurse Magazine Scholarship Program
Open to racial and ethnic minority nursing students enrolled in the third or fourth year of an accrediated four-year BSN program or in an accelerated program leading to a BSN degree or an accelerated master’s entry nursing program that bypasses the traditional BSN degree (such as BA-to-MSN). Must be a US citizen or permanent resident.
Graduate Nursing Scholarships
Open to RNs enrolled in master's or doctoral programs in maternal-child nursing; must be a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, the National Association of Neonatal Nurses or the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses.
Mary Mahoney Professional Nurse Organization Scholarship
Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Endowment provides scholarships for African American nursing students; must be a resident of the Puget Sound region of Washington state.
Massachusetts Legion Auxiliary Past Presidents' Parley Scholarships
Applicant must be the child of a veteran, in addition to being resident of Massachusetts.
Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning
Provides scholarships and forgivable loans for nursing students pursuing BSN, RN-to-BSN, MSN or PhD degrees. Must be a Mississippi resident attending a Mississippi school and agree to work as a nurse in Mississippi upon graduation. Also offers a Nursing Teacher Stipend Program for graduate students who agree to teach at an accredited nursing school in Mississippi.
National Association of Hispanic Nurses
NAHN Scholarship Awards are open to NAHN members enrolled in accredited associate, diploma, baccalaureate, graduate or LPN/LVN nursing programs; must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
National Black Nurses Association NBNA Scholarship Program
Various scholarships open to African American nursing students currently enrolled in an LPN/LVN, diploma, AND, BSN or advanced degree program. Must be a member or NBNA.
National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurse Associations
Applicant must be a member of one of the five NCEMNA member associations: Asian American/Pacific Islander Nurses Association, National Alaska Native American Indian Nurses Association, National Association of Hispanic Nurses, National Black Nurses Association and Philippine Nurses Association of America. Scholarship recipients are nominated by their association.
Native American College Grants
Because Native Americans have long been at a disadvantage financially and in terms of educational opportunities, the US government and serveral private benefactors offer financial aid to members of Native American tribes to help fund a college education. In fact, there are even tribal colleges, first created by the Navajo Nation in 1968, that are controlled by the tribes and located on reservations to service tribal members, allowing them to preserve language and culture of their people by integrating these elements into the curriculum.
Native Hawaiian Health Scholarship Program
Provides financial support for Native Hawaiian students pursuing careers in selected health professions. Upon completion of studies, recipients must provide one year of full-time service to Native Hawaiian populations of greatest need for each year of scholarship support.
Nurses Educational Funds, Inc.
Various graduate-level scholarships are also available. Must be a U.S. citizen and a member of a professional nursing association.
Nursing Scholarship Award is awarded to a PNAA member enrolled in or admitted to an accredited master’s, post-master’s or doctoral degree program in nursing.
Transcultural Nursing Society Scholarship Award
Awarded to a TCNS member enrolled full-or part-time in a graduate program focusing on transcultural, cross-cultural or international nursing.
Tribal Scholar Colleges and Scholarships
There are more than 30 tribal colleges and universities serving a total of about 30,000 students, 85 percent of who live at or below the poverty level. The schools are located mostly on economically depressed, isolated Indian reservations.
