Police, Fire, Ambulance.....................................9-911 (911 from a cell phone)

For all minor emergencies and facilities concerns, please call FNU Security. The Guard will notify the proper FNU representatives or local authorities.

FNU Security - Wendover & Campus...............ext.2222 (1-859-899-2222 from a cell phone)

If someone becomes ill or is injured and requires immediate assistance:

Dial 9-911 (911 from a cell phone) and provide detailed information on the location of the ill/injured person.

Unless trained, do not attempt to render any first aid before assistance arrives. Do not attempt to move a person who has fallen and appears to be in pain.

Attempt to obtain the following information from the ill or injured person: Name, description of symptoms, and major medical history (heart condition, asthma, diabetes, etc.) Remain at the scene after emergency personnel have arrived to help provide information.

If someone may have been poisoned:

Dial 9-1-800-222-1222 to reach the Poison Control Center.

If the person has collapsed, is not breathing, or is having seizures, dial 9-911 (911 from a cell phone) .

POWER OUTAGE - Although rare, the power to campus may be compromised due to weather or overloading the circuit breakers.

In the case of a power outage:

Keep a flashlight in your area. If you are in an unlit area, proceed cautiously to an area that has emergency lights.

Call FNU Security at ext.2222 (1-859-899-2222 from a cell phone). This number will ring on campus and at Wendover.

FLOODING AND WATER DAMAGE - Serious water damage can occur from a number of sources such as broken pipes, clogged drains, broken windows, or construction errors.

If a water leak occurs:

Call FNU Security at ext.2222 (1-859-899-2222 from a cell phone). This number will ring on campus and at Wendover.

If there are electrical appliances or outlets near the leak, use extreme caution and evacuate the area. Take only essential steps to avoid or reduce immediate water damage, such as covering objects.

If you know the source of the water and are confident of your ability to stop it (i.e., unclog the drain), do so.

When you hear the alarm or are verbally instructed to begin evacuating the building:

Use the nearest stairway and evacuate as quickly as possible but in an orderly manner. Do not push or shove. If requested, accompany and assist persons with disabilities.

Shut all doors behind you as you go. Closed doors can slow the spread of fire, smoke, and water.

Once outside, move at least 100 feet from the building or follow the instructions of emergency personnel on the scene. Stay away from building entrances to avoid interfering with emergency personnel.

The predetermined safe meeting spot on campus is the parking lot between Haggin Dorm & Morton Gill.

VIOLENCE ON CAMPUS - If you witness an act of violence on campus get away from the situation as quickly as possible. If you cannot get away, take cover to protect yourself. Call FNU Security at ext. 2222 (1-859-899-2222 from a cell phone) or 9-911 (911 from a cell phone) to report the incident.

Response to Fire or Suspected Fire:

If a burning odor or smoke is present, pull a fire alarm to activate the fire alarm system. Evacuate as quickly as possible but in an orderly manner. Do not push or shove.

If you can help control the fire without personal danger and have received training, take action with available fire extinguisher or fire hose. If not, leave the area.

Once you have evacuated the building, dial 9-911 (911 from a cell phone).

Response to Fire Alarms:

Evacuate the building immediately using the nearest stairway; do not delay to locate personal items. Assist in evacuating persons in your immediate vicinity by checking common spaces as you exit. If requested, accompany and assist persons with disabilities.

Shut all doors behind you as you go. Closed doors can slow the spread of fire and smoke.

Go to the safe meeting spot on campus, the parking lot between Haggin Dorm and Morton Gill.

Return to the building only when given the “all clear” by police or other proper emergency personnel. Do NOT assume that when the audible alarm ceases it is safe to enter the building.

TORNADO/SEVERE THUNDERSTORM - Although rare, tornados and severe thunderstorms may happen in Hyden. A tornado watch means that weather conditions are favorable for the formation of a tornado. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been sighted in the surrounding area. Emergency sirens are activated when there is a tornado warning.

If a tornado warning has been issued and you are inside:

Stay inside and away from outside walls, windows, mirrors, overhead fixtures, and unsecured objects. Do not leave the shelter area until after the storm is over.

If possible, move to a level below ground, an interior corridor, or room or office without windows. There are three below the ground levels (basements) on Campus: 1) Haggin; 2), Mardi; and 3) Bolton House. If requested, assist persons with disabilities to the safest area.

If a tornado warning has been issued and you are outside:

If you are in your car, get out of it. Never try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle.

Look for a nearby safe structure in which to take shelter. If there is no shelter, lie flat in a low area away from trees with your hands covering your head and neck.

EARTHQUAKE - Occurrences of earthquakes are incredibly rare in Hyden.

If you are inside during an earthquake:

Immediately take cover under a table or desk or stand in a doorway. In areas where cover is not available, kneel at the base of an interior wall, away from windows, with your head down and covered.

Be alert for falling objects and stay away from overhead fixtures, bookcases, and electrical equipment.

If you are outside during an earthquake:

Move to an open area away from buildings, trees, and power lines. If unable to move to an open area, watch for falling objects.

After an earthquake:

Be aware of the possibility of aftershocks.

If possible and it is safe to do so, evacuate the building as soon as the shaking has ceased. Open doors carefully. Watch for falling objects. Do not move injured persons unless they are in obvious immediate danger (fire, building collapse, etc.)

Do not use matches or lighters which could ignite unknown exposed gasses.
